I’ve been thinking a lot about freedom and how it relates to creativity.
We all know that creativity requires SOME boundaries, otherwise there is too much latitude and we will burn out. (A river with banks runs deep, but a river flowing on an open plain will dry up in the sun…) The difficulty is understanding which boundaries are appropriate and which are not.
Many artists spend their lives fighting against boundaries only to find themselves frustrated and directionless, while many artists fold into the expectations and boundaries others put upon them and live inverted, frustrated lives.
The secret to freedom is proactive behavior. It is understanding clearly who we are, and bringing it to each situation we encounter rather than constantly reacting to everything around us. It is not allowing others to define US. (They can control and define our environment, but they cannot control and define US unless we allow them to.)
As the stories show, we can thrive even in prison. We can thrive in ANY situation with a proper understanding of who we are and a willingness to approach each situation proactively rather than reactively.
