The artist is one who can see the deeper meaning behind the observed. As Stephen Nachmanovitch points out, this is the meaning of “intelleto”, or the deep knowing of reality. It is the ability to see patterns and extract them for consumption.
The artist is one who can reveal the patterns within the mundane. Within the everyday.
When our curiosity is dulled, we lose this sense. When we are not looking for patterns, we will not find them. When we feel that we’ve lost our voice, we will have nothing to say about them even if we see them.
Without the artist, life becomes a day-to-day reactive existence. It is the artist who teaches us to be proactive. We need to artist to inspire, lead, teach and reveal.
