My friend Brian tells a story about weeds and sidewalks.
If a weed is allowed to grow underneath and between the cracks of a sidewalk, it’s a minor nuisance and a slight aesthetic problem, but other than that it seems like no big deal. Over time, however, the weed will grow and with slight pressure on the concrete will eventually cause minor cracks to appear. Once this happens, water will seep into the cracks and over time, with freezing and thawing, the water will cause major cracks to appear in the sidewalk. A tiny weed, given enough time, will open up a giant crack in a slab of concrete.
Brian’s “moral to the story” is this:
“Small weed now, BIG problem later.”
It seems like a small deal to let a day go by without doing what we know is the right thing. It seems like a small thing to sleep an extra half hour instead of getting up to work out, study, create, whatever. No big deal.
But over time…
We start to see cracks appearing in our lives. The cracks themselves are not a huge deal either, but when real pressure comes…we crumble.
Are you doing the small things that you KNOW to do today? Are you applying the stuff that you KNOW works, or are you always looking for the next fix?
Small crack now, BIG problem later.
You nailed it on the head! Entities as all levels (individuals, families, communities, businesses, governments…) at some point default to this type of approach and the problems inevitably outweigh any time or rest or comfort received from letting it go.
Thanks for sharing.
